RAC technical representatives - 3 minute updates
Angela Ruple (NMFS)- The National Seafood Inspection Program is going back to food safety issues. Jack Dunnigan is the new Office Director for the Office of Sustainable Fisheries.
Tanya Roberts (ERS)- ERS is working on a cost of sanitation report. ERS has collected data for 2 case studies on private incentives for food safety initiatives.
Carol Maczka (FSIS)- The tenderized vs. non-tenderized beef risk assessment was sent to the NACMCF for information purposes. NAS has an ongoing study on the scientific basis for performance standards. E. coli risk assessment is under review by the NAS, comments due in May. FSIS is in the scoping phase for risk assessments on Salmonella spp in beef and ready-to-eat products and Salmonella spp. in Poultry and ready-to-eat products. S.E. in eggs and egg products risk assessment will be revised. Personnel from APHIS, FSIS and CFSAN are being trained on how to run the Harvard BSE risk assessment model and will examine the impact of various mitigation strategies on reducing potential exposures to humans. FSIS is in the scoping phase for a risk assessment that will examine the risk of environmental contamination on RTE product.
Dennis Utterback (ORD)- ORD has
a dioxin sampling program and supports a study on the effects
of cooking on dioxin. Here is the site for DEI:
http://cfpub.epa.gov/ncea/cfm/recordisplay.cfm?deid=15239
Mary Torrence (CSREES)- Next funding cycle NRI food safety program deadline has been moved from Jan. to Dec. 15th. CSREES is seeking applications for EPI studies. To see last years abstracts visit http://www.csrees.usda.gov
Bob Webb (DoD)- VSA's new food inspection regulations will come out soon.
Dick Whiting (CFSAN)- Listeria and Vibrio risk assessments are almost ready to be re-calculated. National Advisory Committee meeting (NACMF) is looking at dating of ready-to-eat foods, quality vs. safety.
Steve Anderson (CBER)- FDA Center for Biologics is attending this RAC meeting because safety of biologics are indirectly linked to the safety of the food supply. For example, are measures in the UK for protecting the food supply from BSE adequate to protect the US blood supply?
Pam Simpson (APHIS)- Pam is working on a proposal to study risk of FMD in cheese and cheese by-products.
Mary Bartholomew (CVM)- CVM is evaluating clean-out procedures at feed-mills. CVM is also thinking about bioterrorism and risk assessment.
Dennis Lang (NIH)- NIAID has a good webpage for their bioterrorism reponse. Dennis distributed copies of the strategic plan for category A bioterrorism agents. Food and water borne agents are category D agents. His office is keeping an eye open for collaborative opportunities.
Mark Tamplin (ARS)- 9 new models in PMP since Jan. A CD version will be published once a year. Version 6.1 should be out in April. Mark passed out flyers on The Center for Excellence in Microbial Modeling and Informatics (CEMMI).
Angelo Turturro (NCTR)- NCTR programs are being geared toward counter-bioterrorism efforts. This is full circle because the NCTR site was used to manufacture bioweapons 50 years ago.
