	TAG Working Group on GM Food Labelling, Food Standards Australia New Zealand	Australian Pilot Survey of GM Food Labelling of Corn and Soy Food Products Report of a study to determine how businesses are adapting to and complying with GM food labeling requirements in Australia that went into effect in December 2001. Products derived from corn and soy were tested for the presence of GM food, labels were examined, and documents of food manufacturers, importers, and retailers were surveyed for evidence that their products were in compliance with GM food regulations. The presence of a management system for determining GM status of ingredients was also included in the document surveys. It addresses the safety and regulation of genetically modified foods in Canada. Topics discussed include genetically modified foods and food production, the regulatory environment, potential effects on human health (including toxicants and allergens), nutrition, potential threats to animal health and welfare and food safety, and potential environmental risks. Regulatory issues such as the concept of substantial equivalence, the precautionary principle, risk assessment, and labeling policies are also addressed.
