Tips for Searching the Clearinghouse

 

The Clearinghouse provides three different search engines to help you find the resources you need. Read these tips to know how to make the most out of each of these tools.

What is it?

• Default Clearinghouse search engine
• Powered by Google
• In-house search of all links on the Clearinghouse
• In-house search of all links on the Clearinghouse
• Offers more choices to narrow your search

Where is it?

• Upper right hand corner of each Clearinghouse page

• Located on its own page

What it Searches?

• Full text of all Clearinghouse web pages, including Word documents and PDFs hosted on the Clearinghouse server
• Title, author, source, summary, and keywords fields of each link on the Clearinghouse
• Title, author, source, summary, and/or keywords fields of each link on the Clearinghouse

When to use?

• To find a Clearinghouse page on a particular topic
• To search the full text of documents on the Clearinghouse
• To find direct links to resources on a particular topic
• To find direct links to resources by a particular author or source
• To find direct links to resources on a more specific topic
• To find direct links to resources by a particular author or source
• To find a link to one particular resource when you know all or part of its citation

How to use?

• Type search term(s) into the search box
• (Optional) Use Google search options to narrow down your search.

For help, see Google Search Tips
• Select the option "Search our database of links" below the search box
• Type in a term or phrase
• All words will be treated as a phrase
• Does not recognize Boolean operators
• Acronyms will also be searched as the spelled-out version.
• See Listing of Acronyms recognized by the search
• Select which field (title, author/source, summary, keywords, or all) to search using the drop-down box
• All words in a particular search box are treated as a phrase
• Acronyms will also be searched as the spelled-out version. See our Listing of Acronyms recognized by the search
• You may also search on our internal keywords. See a Listing of Keywords used in the Clearinghouse.

Optional:
• Add a second word or phrase in the second search box and choose a Boolean operator (AND, OR, NOT)
• Select a resource type from the drop-down box to limit results to this resource type
• Choose to view the results alphabetically instead of the default sorting by entry date to the Clearinghouse
