8673 Evers, E.; Chardon, J. A swift Quantitative Microbiological Risk Assessment (sQMRA) tool
URL: http://foodrisk.org/exclusives/sQMRA/
Format: HTML MS Excel
In this FoodRisk Exclusive, the authors developed a simplified QMRA model especially aimed at comparing the risk of pathogen–food product combinations. The swift Quantitative Microbiological Risk Assessment (sQMRA) – tool is implemented in Microsoft Excel. Special attention is given to make the sQMRA tool insightful, for educational purposes. Like in full-scale QMRA, pathogen numbers are followed through the food chain, which in this case starts at retail and ends with the number of human cases of illness. The model is deterministic and includes cross-contamination and preparation (heating) in the kitchen and a dose–response relationship. Please see the original article publication in the FoodRisk database, as well..

Outbreaks from 2002 through 2006 recorded in a European norovirus surveillance database were investigated for virologic and epidemiologic indicators of food relatedness. The selection tool enabled prospectively focused follow-up. Use of this tool is likely to improve data quality and strain typing in current surveillance systems, which is necessary for identification of potential international foodborne outbreaks (a spreadsheet of this tool is also provided with this reference)..

In this report, we describe the use of relative virulence (%) as an alternative to LD50 for interpretation of mouse virulence assay for L. monocytogenes. Besides providing a more direct interpretation in comparison with LD50 values for mouse virulence assay, this method requires fewer dosage groups per L. monocytogenes strain, and eliminates CFU estimation that is step subject to variations between runs and also between laboratories.

Format: HTML PDF MS Excel
Foods and cosmetics are examples of regulated products which are sometimes reformulated in response to changes in the marketplace or regulatory environment. RTI and the Economics Team at the FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) produced this model, based on the earlier labeling cost model, to help estimate the costs incurred in reformulation due to changes in regulations. The report provides information on the process of reformulation and a description of the underlying assumptions and calculations used in developing the model. Instructions for using the model are in Section 4 of the report.
